Mr. Ming Chan was born to family of scholars in San Tow city, China, and was exposed to art education at a very young age. Later he became a student of the famous calligraphist Mak Wah San, and was elected as the chairman of the Mak Calligraphy Society in Hong Kong.

In 1981, Chan set up Ming's Calligraphy Studio, teaching youngsters the art of calligraphy. He was the champion of the Calligraphy Competition sponsored by the Art Society of The University of Hong Kong, and the Open Competition of Calligraphy sponsored by The Urban Council of Hong Kong. Before his move to the United States Ming Chan was considered one of the most acknowledged calligraphist in Hong Kong. His beautiful style combines gentleness with strength and portrays an in depth liveliness of children’s laughter. Art lovers worldwide have sought his works, and two of his masterpieces, “The To Fu Poem” and “The Sun Over the Wide Blue Sea” are now on permanent display at the Museum of Art of Hong Kong.

Since moving to the United States, Mr. Chan has been very active in promoting Chinese Culture and Art in The San Francisco Bay Area. He created an 8'x8' poster character of the Dragon to help celebrate the Chinese New Year Festival in 2000 commissioned by the city of San Francisco. In 2001, the US Post Office invited Mr. Chan to inscribe the commemorative stamps issued to celebrate the “Year of Snake" and to support the Olympics. As an active community member, Mr. Chan donated some of his works for fundraising auction purposes to benefit Self Help project for the Elderly. He has also been invited to demonstrate Chinese calligraphy at the China and Hong Kong Institute at UC Berkeley, as well as on television. He has been honored awards by Mayor Brown of San Francisco and Mayor Cheng of Milpitas.

Ming Chan's dedication to the art of Calligraphy can be seen from his persistence to make continuous cultural breakthroughs. He is planning a tour of the State Capitals of the Country, in which he hopes he can exchange ideas and insights with other artists, to enrich his creativity and contribute to the cultural and artistic diversity of the world.
